short story #2: Becky and Suze (Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner)

Becky hated exercise as much as she loved chocolates. Waking up early and trudging up to the gym to squeeze in a workout session before work was hard. And well, it wasn’t her idea of fun. Going to the gym also meant running into the fitness freaks whose slim, lean figures made her suck in her breath and her stomach! But Becky just wasn’t ready to put in so many hours at the gym. She only kept her “gym dates” because of Suze, her best friend’s constant nagging. Eventually, Suze decided to let Becky off the hook and suggested that they could skip the gym and go for morning runs together instead. Becky being Becky was very excited at the idea because it gave her a reason to shop for her I’m-going-to-walk-everyday attire. Blue track pants, sweatshirts, and new shoes to go with it – an investment that was going to be well worth the expense. Guilted partly by the fact that she had to make the best of her I’m-going-to-walk-everyday attire and partly motivated by the desire to lead a healthy life (read: avoid getting lectured by Suze), Becky never stopped going for morning runs. And she even learned to love it!

Author’s Note:

Okay, now that might not be my best work. When I started writing this story, I had a plot but that kind of went away as I progressed! But I’m currently in an I-will-not-obsess-much-over-editing and publish-before-you-have-second-thoughts phase.

This was my tribute to one of my favourite novel (and movie adaptations) – The Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella. If the names Becky and Suze alerted you to this fact as soon as you started reading this story, I’m so glad to know that you love this novel/movie as much as me!

This post was written in response to the Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner Week #23 photo prompt.

  1. Not read the book as yet, but will do that soon. Have seen it on the stands at Borders.
Well, at least the fear for her friend’s lectures got her go shopping and then enjoy walking too. But walking is so much more fun than the gym. I totally agree with you about the many super-slim, super-shapy beautifully made women dressed to flaunt all that they wish to flaunt while you are strutting about on a tread mill sweating like a pig in clothes that a definitely two sizes bigger does not exactly make a gym session something that you would look forward to.
    Lovely story, Shweta!

      1. Books, they are such wonderful creations. The smell of them, the excitement we feel when we flip the pages and they transporting us to a different world, ah! magic indeed. What would we be without books ad numerous stories they have in store?
