The colour of the sweater that I was wearing,
My hair that never failed to frustrate me,
The cup of coffee that I last had,
The night sky and the alleyway I was walking along,
All five had one thing in common,
something I was extremely fond of…
I stopped loving it when blackness clouded my vision.
The bold headlines that announced my pitiful end, and
whatever remained of my charred body, destroyed my love for it.
Black used to be my favorite colour,
until it was all I could see…
Now, I hate it with a vengeance,
the traitor that coloured the souls of my molesters.
Author’s Note:
We live in a world that makes us feel extremely grateful if we manage to make it back to our homes, safe and sound, especially if we have been out on the streets, alone during late evenings/nights. The above piece was purely fictional, but then again, it’s not too far from reality.

A powerful and poignant piece. Black is a beautiful color.. But I understand how monotonous it can

Thanks a lot, Priya! Too much of anything is not necessarily a good thing!

I can imagine how monotonous it can be to see only one color.. Very well written, Shweta.

Was very relatable. I was walking at 4 am to get to a bus stop which was 3 miles away to catch a flight. The streets were almost empty. But there were times when unsavoury characters would come my way. Whenever that happened, I would just cross to the other side of the street. People usually don’t do that in order to convince themselves of not being prejudicial. All I have to say is that because of my prejudice, I am right now on a bus and not mugged and lying in the streets.

I dare not go out after 10. It’s just not worth the fear. Take care of yourself, Sid and for God’s sake, don’t ever let go of your prejudices. I think warning bells would be a better term. 😉

What a message!!! Beautifully penned, Shweta! In order to feel safe we must be WISE to know where to go, when to go, and when NOT to. I know the state of this world yet there is so much beauty to see. Listen to your Inner Guidance how to live life safely. She will not let you down! Ever! 💖

Yes. We have to rely on our gut instincts. But unfortunately we live in a world that’s so unpredictable that we can never take safety for granted. Thanks for coming over, Amy!
