Dusk had bid goodbye.
The dark veil of night had claimed the sky.
The Earth was silent, eerily so.
The trees were still, the winds – non-existent.
The humans were all locked up in cages of their own making.
Distancing, socially, from each other,
and from activities that hurt the environment,
the very environment that nourished them.
As humans waged their battles against their invisible enemy, nature thrived,
healing, mending, undoing the harm that had been thoughtlessly inflicted upon it.
The flashes of lightning signalled a break in the envelope of silence.
A long, low rumble followed the lightning,
a rumble that seemed to ripple away until it was no longer heard.
The rumbling and growling persisted for a while.
Without warning, a loud bang pierced the night sky!
and along with it, the ears of the human,
who was staring at the night sky in amazement.
She compared her situation with that of her ancestors,
who had to seek shelter while the bombs, grenades and shells rained fire.
Her situation wasn’t that dire,
But it wasn’t safe either.
Her generation had it easy.
They got to fight the enemy from the safe confines of their home.
Unscathed by battle wounds,
Untroubled by the grip of traumatic memories.
And yet, they found it so hard to stay at home!
Even though that was all it took to tip the scales in their favour.
The heavy clouds gave way and showered rain.
Even as droplets of rain pelted down like bullets,
she continued to stare, up at the night sky.
Though the downpour had dampened the earth,
the flame of hope within her burned a little stronger.
Drenched in the refreshing downpour,
she looked up to the heavens,
and offered a silent prayer.
The humans were rooting for each other.
Hopefully, they’ll be able to overcome this virus too.
Before it is too late.
NOTE: It’s raining here in Bangalore! What started as a sudden downpour has slowly morphed into a drizzle. It’s hard to find hope in these difficult times. I feel as if we are going through WW-III, waging our battles against an invisible enemy – COVID-19. Stay safe, everyone. Hopefully, this ordeal will be over soon.

Optimism is hard to come by these days. And I didn’t feel like taking a dark turn. Thank you, Sadje. Glad to know that you enjoyed it. 🙂

It is of course hard to be upbeat and happy in the current situation but at the same time, we need hope to keep us grounded and sane.

This is one of your best posts Shweta. Very descriptive and moody, it transports the reader to your world. I hope you write more such stuff. Kudos!

With ganga and yamuna becoming cleaner, the dhauladhar ranges being seen, with animals walking freely, the mother earth is quietly telling us that we are the actual virusus.

Yes, well said! Nature is definitely healing itself and has once again reminded us of the consequences of our actions. Thank you so much for reading, dear.

Beautiful. I write novels without a problem, but I find I’m not very good at poetry. I can relate to feeling like WWIII. Some days the world seems unrecognizable, but personally I love the rain. It washes away all the pain and all the ugly. When it rains here in Texas most people hate it but I get happy.
