I’m the only planet they didn’t name after a deity.
Was it because the humans had elevated me?
To the same pedestal that was reserved for their many deities.
I wonder.
The blue planet!
Blue like the water that covers the majority of my surface,
which seems to be having a losing battle with impurities.
My beauty was well-known and appreciated.
I was the envy of other celestial bodies,
in this galaxy and beyond.
Asteroids have been launched at me,
To mar my beautiful surface.
There have been a few hits, many near misses, and many that totally missed the mark!
But the threat from outer space pales,
in comparison to the one species that is destroying me from the inside.
I nourished them and gave them everything that they could possibly want, and more.
I took them in and provided shelter when all other planets had refused.
But human greed was much more than I had ever anticipated.
My moon was the only one who stayed with me,
Though she had her reservations about the humans.
The humans took advantage of all my other species,
They hunted birds, animals, fish, and others.
They cleared forests to suit their needs.
I was their playground,
the one who will have to pay the price for their thoughtless actions.
My air quality dipped,
My water was being stripped of purity,
My soil succumbed and made way for barren expanses.
My Ozone layer was no longer intact.
All of the humans weren’t heartless,
Some spoke up for me, defended my rights.
They started movements and petitions to save me.
To save me, before I was too far gone.
Before I was past the point of no return.
They protested, argued, demanded, and deliberated,
Eventually, a day was set aside to honour me.
A day to evaluate their actions that threatened my survival.
It was a humble beginning to a major movement!
Policies, frameworks, acts, and protocols were formulated,
to save me from the clutches of their own.
It’s been 50 years since they decided
that April 22 will be known as Earth Day.
It may be unknown to humans,
But Nature has put me under a healing spell.
The humans are now caged in traps of their own making.
But I am healing,
mending the wounds of over-exploitation and ingratitude.
Slowly, but steadily.
There’s a lesson that humans keep forgetting.
Nature and I will continue to thrive,
with or without them.
Better, without them.
Humans are just guests who think they can control and manipulate us.
I’m the only planet they didn’t name after a deity.
Was it because the humans had elevated me too?
To the same pedestal that was reserved for their many deities.
Their actions most certainly don’t make me feel like one.
Tell me, humans,
Have you started realizing the magnitude of your thoughtless activities?
It’s too bad the dinosaurs aren’t around to warn you.
Author’s Note:
The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. Climate change is real, (don’t let them tell you otherwise!) and it is one of the most pressing issues.
Let us make a small change in our lives. It may be as simple as the following:
- Requesting shops, restaurants, and other commercial establishments to not print a customer’s copy when you use your cards to make a payment.
- Avoid taking unnecessary print-outs.
- Making use of both sides of plain sheets.
- Switching off lights, fans, etc when not in use.
- Reducing and eventually phasing out the use of plastics.
- Carrying cloth or paper bags when you go shopping.
- Recycling as much as you can.
- Investing in stainless steel straws…
- and so on.
The possibilities are endless, but even a small action can make a huge difference in our planet’s future.
Take accountability. Act responsibly.
Our future generations have a right to a clean, safe, and unpolluted environment and natural resources.
So what action are you taking already? What action are you planning to take?

My thoughts from many many days match with what you said…….ITs a slow process but more and more people are changing habits by opting minimalism and intentional usage. Switching even couple of things right in your home will make loads of difference. Thank you for another beautifully worded rhythm.

How you speak the truth, Shweta. Humankind believes (or most do) that they are more powerful then Mother. Wrong! Mother always has Her way in the end. It is humankind that is in danger of extinction. Perhaps those who can make lasting change are taking note how clean and fresh and pure our air has become since the world has had brakes on. Perhaps. Happy Earth Day to you!! Loved your poem and I love the way you think! xo

Well put for the day. But I have this strong feeling that modern generation is mostly social media. We will only become worse with time.
A really nice poem. It reflects the need and beauty. And thank you so much for the tag! 🙂

Oh, that is a disturbing thought. I hope that we are much better than our previous generations when it comes to taking action. Hopefully, it won’t be too late!
Thank you so much for your kind words. It’s thanks to you that I remember about that particular phrase. So I felt it was necessary to link to your post. 🙂

Oh, hopefully, they will live up to their expectations. Otherwise, there won’t be a planet left to sustain humans! Unless they colonize the moon and the Mars of course!

This crazy species of homosepiens have been using the resources of this blue planet ruthlessly and mindlessly over the centuries. It is high time for introspection and correction now. Let’s join our hands together and help this magnificent planet regain its beauty and charm!! What a lovely composition Shweta.

Before the pandemic I used an app called Too Good To Go. With it I was able to procure food from restaurants that would have otherwise been thrown out at a very cheap price. Trying to go zero-waste was one of my goals before the pandemic. But now at supermarkets I choose fruits that are plastic wrapped rather than loose ones. My waste production has increased with the pandemic ☹️

That’s a great app and a great initiative. I wonder if there’s something like that in India. Good you you, Sid! You can buy loose ones and wash it really well too. That’s what I’m doing. This pandemic has been really beneficial to nature and our planet in many other ways. Hopefully, at the end of this ordeal, we’ll be able to take away some key lessons and continue to keep our air, water and skies clearer. Thank you for reading.

Strange I never realised that earth was the only planet with a name that wasn’t the name of a god . And how right you are that it took Earth to take the matter in her own hands to protect herself because we humans were determined to destroy her .

Strange isn’t it? I discovered it very recently too and it seemed like a great way to begin the poem. So glad to know that you had enjoyed it! Thank you so much, dear.
Yes, it does seem that way, doesn’t it? We’ve always heard that Nature will retaliate if we take things too far but we never expected anything on this scale. How’s the situation in Mumbai? I hope your area is far from the hot spots!

Our area is not too far from Worli and there is a building right across the road that is sealed! Luckily our building is strictly following the lockdown and even the residents have been given time slots to walk downstairs. Outside vendors are limited and not allowed to enter the building and we members do not even visit one another’s homes!

This lock down has clearly put the focus back on earth and nature! With all the ambitions that humans have for exploring the universe, sometimes, you feel that if half of that effort was ever put to try and see the earth more clearly, we would have benefited so much more! Well written Shweta!
