tiny tale #78: A World of Difference

Dhyan was a special, little boy. His parents always told him so. He was the apple of their eye. However, the kids at the school thought differently. They called him a weirdo and competed with each other to come up with new nicknames for him. For all they knew, his name could have been Freak one day, Dumbo the next day, Weirdo on the day after and so on. But his imaginary friends never bullied him. Barny the dinosaur, Hooty the Owl, Fiery the dragon, and Buggy the rabbit didn’t care that he was different. In the company of his imaginary friends, the world seemed like a happier and kinder place.

This 100 word story was written in response to Sadje’s What Do You See prompt #33. Thank you Sadje for hosting this challenge. The challenge is to use the picture prompt as inspiration to compose an original story, poem, or a caption.

My heart goes to all those poor kids who were ever at the receiving end of bullying. This one’s for them. I hope that the scars weren’t too deep that time couldn’t heal them.

  1. Nice story, Shweta. Brings back nice memories of imaginary friends (mine were “Monee” and “Abast” ;P ). Although Dhyan suffers bullying which is a big problem, the story is peaceful and happy. I like Dhyan already. Great story indeed.

    1. Ohh, I’m sorry to hear that, Bharath. ☹️ I was bullied for having to wear glasses. I stopped wearing them because of the nicknames. Eventually, my vision got so bad that now I have to wear glasses for life.

      1. I wish that I was much stronger back then too. But then again, I’ve learnt from those experiences.
Whoa! I wish that happened to me. But that’s too much to ask for. 😂😂😂

      2. I know what it feels like. I’ve had similar experiences though not because of glasses but because of how frail I was and what a coward I’ve been(Maybe I still am but that’s a story for another day).
Stay strong, Shweta! We need strong women like you.

  2. Children can be quite cruel with each other. I love your take on the prompt. The world of our imagination is kind and welcoming.
Thanks Shweta for joining in the challenge.

    1. They can be very cruel indeed and the victims of their thoughtless actions walk away with too many scars. I’m glad that you loved my take on the prompt. This story almost went a different way! Thank you for this great prompt. I couldn’t have done it without your picture. Thank you for your support, Sadje ♥️
