A glimmer in the distance

I walked through the barren expanse
Braving the scorching heat
The desert stretched into the distance
As far as my eye could see
My parched mouth and cracked lips
Yearned for water
But, water was nowhere to be found
That’s when I noticed
A flash of silver in the horizon
I pushed myself
Half walking, half crawling,
Towards the glimmer in the distance
The silver speck beckoned me
And I walked as fast as I could
As I came closer to the glimmer,
I realized,
With a sinking feeling in my stomach,
That the water had vanished into thin air
My heart clenched, as it dawned on me
That it was just a mirage
Luck was not on my side
Another silver speck appeared
I walked towards it hopefully
Disappointment followed me in spades
The vicious cycle repeated,
Over and over again
Until I woke up
With a sudden jolt,
Sweating profusely,
But immensely relieved
To find that it was just a nightmare!
