Silly
(adjective)
When you choose to believe that a black cat crossing your path when you are about to begin a journey is a sign of ill luck, rather than the fact that the black cat was simply in a hurry to get somewhere that it took the risk of jumping in front of you (or even worse, your vehicle!)
This post was written in response to today’s One-Liner Wednesday challenge from Linda G. Hill. The challenge, as the name implies is to come up with a one-liner. Please click on the link to know more about the rules of this challenge and/or to read the other entries by my fellow bloggers.
There is this superstition in India that if a black cat crosses your path, it will bring bad luck or cause accidents. Some people even stop for a while and start their journey after a while!

I have always been told it was bad luck to walk under a ladder. I spent 25 years in the construction industry and walked under so many ladders. Still here and in one piece so don’t really believe it!

Oh, clearly it isn’t bad luck! I am glad that it didn’t hold you back. Thank you for sharing 🙂

My favorite superstition is to have curd with sugar before embarking on something new. Partly because I have a sweet tooth and the other being a yoghutoholic.(Love yogurt) 🙂

I have a sweet tooth as well so I can agree that it is a great superstition 🙂

Let’s agree to not call it a superstition then 😀

If I have to believe this, I can’t get anywhere. There’s a black cat always roaming around my home.

Especially at night! This was applicable in olden days when our vechicles where bullock or horse pulled carts. You know how the cat’s eye shine at night? For a black cat, you just see the two sparkling eyes and it is kinda spooky 😄 There are chances that the animals which pulled the cart to get scared at those and run in different directions, turning the cart, and hence causing an accident. For this reason, they stopped the cart for a while when they saw a black cat and waited until the cat was no more in the vicinity. This doesn’t apply anymore, and I personally think black cats are much more adorable than the regular ones 😻😊

Oh. I never knew about this backstory. Now it makes sense but people still follow it. Even now! Thanks for explaining it to me, Achu chechi. Yes, I think that black cats are more adorable too 😍

sometimes I believe, sometimes not as few times, something bad actually happened 😅😅 out of no where , when chances were very little so I always prefer to remain neutral, may be a coincidence

Same with me! I still wonder if dog’s howls and owl’s hoots are coincidences to death or warnings.

And Also Cat cry at night
I too wonder

I’ve heard that about owl’s hoots but not about dog’s howls. I’ve heard that hearing the hooting of an owl means that you’re going to get the news that someone died.

Very right. The same is the prediction with dog’s howl. I’ve witnessed these symbols more than once and it’s hard to ignore them as mere superstitions.

Yes, it can be a coincidence too, I guess.

We have a superstition where you can’t go straight home after you went to a wake/funeral because you might bring the ghost home with you 😂
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh whoa! So you go someplace else to drop the “ghost” and come back home?
As for us, whenever we come after a funeral, we should head directly for a bath without touching any of the clothes in the house. We should take a head bath, submerge our clothes in water and sprinkle water over items that can’t be washed. And if anyone touches someone who has just returned from the funeral, they should have a bath too. This will be the case till the 14th day from the funeral.
Similar to what many are doing after going it because of the coronavirus effect!

Yep, it’s like we have to confuse the ghost 😂
What will happen if you don’t take a bath or wash your clothes? 😅

This superstition has more to do with hygiene reasons, I guess. I don’t quite remember the consequences of taking a bath and Washing our clothes after attending a funeral.

I remember reading this somewhere. They take a bath so that microbes from decomposition of the dead, also quite numerous in the cremation ground, do not stick to us.

Ah, silly me.
But yes I also know one more it says if you see someone visually impaired or Lilliput kinda people , then the work for which you going, won’t happen!

Maybe it’s so deeply ingrained in us since we have grown up around such stuff..
Omg, how discriminatory! Everyday on my way to work, I come across a colleague who is legally blind. But I cannot say that my work wasn’t done on those days. 😉 There you go, superstition busted!

My Mom taught me a rhyme.
“See a pin and pick it up and all the day you’ll have good luck
See a pin and let it lie and you’ll have no luck ’till you die.”

I completely agree with you and you know in our country, Shweta people believe in all these stupid and nonsense superstitions. Another thing I have heard of cats is that we must not keep them as pets why because they are not faithful like dogs.

There are a lot of superstitions. Most are very silly and pointless. Oh, I’ve not heard such a superstition but I know for a fact that dogs are much more loyal.

Aww, the poor cats!! I wonder would they consider us ill luck, that we’ve crossed their path and caused unnecessary trouble ?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh, I think they would mark us as threats or annoying cohabitants of this planet! They would probably be worried that we might throw a stone at them!
