The best gift is you!

Someone might be more beautiful than you
Someone might be richer than you
Someone might be more popular than you
Someone might be more accomplished than you
Someone might be smarter than you
Someone might be more efficient than you
Someone might be more successful than you
Someone might be wiser than you
These realizations might eat your heart out
But don't let the green-eyed monster in
Fight against it with all your might
You are special
Unique in your own way
There's no one else who can take your place.
Don't fall victim to comparisons!
It makes no sense to compare
your beginning to someone else's middle
Or even the end.
You are special
Unique in your own way
Love yourself a little more every day
Believe in yourself a little more every day
Trust in yourself a little more every day
Have a little faith in yourself
Boost your self-confidence
Don't let anyone pull you down
The best gift is you!
When you truly believe in yourself,
Anything is possible, and,
The world is yours for the taking!

This poem was written in response to Sadje’s What Do You See prompt #87. Thank you, Sadje for hosting this challenge. The challenge is to use the picture prompt as inspiration to compose an original story, poem, or a caption.

For the visually challenged reader, the image shows a wall decorated by splashes of colors. There are outlined sketches of two hands on the wall. Above the decorations, the words “ The best gift is you” are written. A woman can be seen walking a baby in a stroller in the front.

  1. This is so inspiring, Shweta! I’ve always found the concept of comparison irrelevant when it comes to human tendencies. We aren’t any marketing data that actually demand this.

I previously had an opinion that comparing with one’s past self can lead to development. But sometimes, even that makes us obsessed to show some progress. We must learn to adjust to the pace of our life and not keep on running faster and faster than we used to.

    1. Yes. I thought it was a good practice to compare ourselves to our past selves is good. But after reading your comment, I’m realising there’s another side to it too. We’ll be under too much pressure and we’ll start pushing ourselves to extreme limits until we break! So well put, Anisha. We must learn to adjust to the pace of our like and not to keep running faster and faster.

Thanks a lot for reading and for your thoughtful comment. That was a great discussion! I’m glad you enjoyed this 😃

      1. Exactly, Shweta. You’ve inferred my views rightly. Just like metals, we might also break at some fracture point when stress overloads. Sometimes, it’s okay to rest and restore.

I’m glad you enjoyed this discussion. It’s always a pleasure reading your posts. ❤

      2. Oh yes. If the stress is too much, we’ll start to crack too. That’s a beautiful analogy, Anisha! We should rest and start over at times.
It’s great to see the different interpretations to my poems. And this was a very thought-provoking discussion 😃
Oh, I’m so happy to hear that, Anisha. Thank you so much ❤️🤗

  2. Wow… This is very well penned and meaningful poem… liked it a lot… You have also given an important reminder to many in the below line…

    Don’t fall victim to comparisons!

Comparisons always hurts… It is a never ending queue if one fallen in the comparison… Few dedicate their time in doing comparisons… Very well expressed….

      1. Always welcome dear Shweta. Lovely and impactful poem on appreciating and loving who we are. There is no one in this world but Me and we have to respect ourselves first and foremost in order to love and respect others.

  3. nobody is better than us than ourselves. Someone will always have something that you don’t but they’re not you & that’s the greatest power we have ! Loved reading this, I also write stuff like this on my blog, feel free to check it out. Have a wonderful day !
