Relief

Words fail to express certain feelings
Try as they might
words fail to cover
the emotional range of a human heart
How would it feel like
when you can finally draw a breath
after holding your breath for far too long,
How would it feel like
when you are treated to delicious food
after having starved for far too long
How would it feel like
when hope and light return to your life
after being engulfed by the dark for far too long
How would it feel like
when you can take a refreshing sip of water
after feeling parched for far too long

How would it feel like
when you feel the comforting embrace of cool air
after being subjected to the wrath of the sun
How would it feel like
when you finally feel genuine laughter crack your mask open
after being reined in for far too long
How would it feel like
when you finally have a roof over your head
after spending many sleepless nights staring at the cold dark sky
How would it feel like
when the cozy comfort of your bed greets you
after a long day that was frustrating and tiring

How would it feel like
when you come across a shelter in time
after being drenched mercilessly by a rainstorm
How would it feel like
when you finally come across a friendly face
after drifting about awkwardly amongst a crowd of strangers
How would it feel like
when you get the temporary happiness at the start of every weekend
after a long and exhausting week, before the Monday blues kick in
How would it feel like
when you can finally feel words coming forth
after they have abandoned you to a blank space for far too long

How would it feel like
when you are finally free from all shackles
after being bound for far too long
How would it feel like
when you let go of pent up emotions
after holding inside for far too long
How would it feel like
when you finally discover
that your worst fears were just nightmares
How would it feel like
when you can finally feel your burden lighten
after being weighed down for far too long

Wouldn't it feel much like relief?
Words fail to express certain feelings
for relief seems far too small of a word
for feelings that are as different,
as the earth and sky

This post was written in response to Reena’s Exploration Challenge #256. The challenge for this week was to write a post with “Any word starting with Re“.

The challenge is to publish a post on your own blog that responds to the prompt. Click on the link to learn more about this challenge and read my fellow bloggers’ entries. Thank you, Reena for hosting this challenge. 🙂

I am still finding it difficult to carve aside some time for writing. I don’t feel like this is my best work but you do what you have to shake off a nasty writer’s block. Somehow, I get the feeling that the words aren’t flowing as easily as they used to before. I hope you enjoyed my take. Thank you for reading.

    1. I’m so happy to hear that. It means a lot coming from you. You’re right. The secret is not give in and just keep at it, keep writing. That’s exactly what I did with this one. Thank you! I hope you’re feeling better now

      1. It’s been a long time since then. I’m much better now. The cough is taking a long time to go away though. The Bangalore weather doesn’t help matters either. Glad to hear that you’re not feeling tired. It certainly takes a toll

  1. I loved this poem. It’s very powerful and brings a sense of hope in a time of disarray, which most people need. You encompass reality so powerfully. This poem moved me to tears. Thank you for sharing your poem with us!
